Transcript: Ed Stefanski on securing second overall NBA Lottery pick - 5/18/2010
Q: How do you feel after getting the No. 2 pick?

A: “Coming into this, I had just resigned myself that we would get No. 6 and we would get a
good player for the franchise. Then 
when I saw that we were in the top three, I was extremely happy. Obviously, it’s a better position
for us. After the commercial 
break, I look up there and see Jrue Holiday – 19 years old – and now we’re going to have
one of the top three picks in the draft. 
Things are going in the right direction. We’re going to have two young basketball players along
with the young kids that we already 
have in the organization. When the Nets came up No. 3 and I knew we were going to have No. 1
or No. 2, I was just ecstatic. It’s 
kind of surreal right now.”

Q: How has your thought process changed going from No. 6 to No. 2?

A: “I’m an old scout and I scout now too, so right after the draft is over, you start preparing
for the next year. We prepare for 
the draft and our scouts are terrific. We have a great group of people with Tony DiLeo and Courtney
Witte so now we have a decision 
to either keep the No. 2 pick or have the option of trading it. It definitely narrows your search
down once you know that you have 
the No. 2 pick in the Draft.”

Q: What are your thoughts on Evan Turner?

A: “Evan Turner is a terrific basketball player; he has great size. People compare him to Brandon
Roy. This is a compliment, but he 
plays like a 30 year old man out there. He gets a step ahead of everybody. He doesn’t look
like he’s explosive, but for some 
unknown reason like a Brandon Roy, he gets by you and gets to where he wants to go on the court.
He has a great handle and at his 
height, that’s an important trait to have.

Q: On Evan Turner playing three years for Ohio State.

A: “I don’t see it as a negative. He was college player of the year. He is a competitor and
he’s done a good job for them. He 
will definitely be in our mix; I have no doubt about that.”

Q: What do you think about Derrick Favors?

A: “Favors is a guy that we’ve been studying; we like his body. Favors is a kid that is on
the upside down the road you will see 
more and more if he progresses. We hear that he is a good kid and if he is a good kid and a
hard worker with that body and that 
athleticism he should be a real good basketball player in the league.

Q: What do you think about John Wall?

A: “John Wall is an extremely explosive player; a lot like Derrick Rose going North and South
from one endline to the other 
endline. I don’t know that there’s any faster player in college basketball. What I think he
has an upper hand on Derrick Rose as a 
freshman, was I think he shoots the ball better on a pull up jumper. Derrick Rose has now developed
that in the pros; obviously 
Derrick Rose is an All-Star, a special talent, a great athlete and going to be selected No.
1 or No. 2 in the Draft.

Q: How will you decide to pick the draft choice?

A: “When you get the No. 2 pick, you have to take the best player available and that’s what
we’ll do.”

Q: Has the weight of the world being lifted off your shoulders?

A: “I think we got a little luck here. I have said this over and over that our talent was better
than our record. We have to show 
that and prove that on the court. I think that our young players did not have the year or the
progression that we expected. They are 
going to have to show it. So we have a lot of work to do this summer. We have to show the fans
that this is a big start to get the 
No. 2 pick in the draft.”

Q: How much does the Coach that the Sixers bring in affect the draft selection?

A: “I think that when you are up that high, the players that will be available to us – any
coach we get is going to be very happy 
with that pick.”
